PMBOK® Guide – 8th Edition reintroduces the familiar process groups in a more practical way:

As 5 Focus Areas:

• Initiating.

• Planning.

• Executing.

• Monitoring and Controlling.

• Closing.

The important shift is this:

• Focus Areas should not be treated as rigid phases.

• They are practical areas of focus that help project teams manage the work across different project contexts, whether the approach is predictive, adaptive, or hybrid.

• They give project teams structure.

• But they do not remove flexibility.

This is one of the important messages in PMBOK 8:

Modern project management needs both.

Enough structure to guide the work.

Enough flexibility to fit the context.
